Responsibilities of Worship Roles
Presider: Create the initial order of worship and provides as early as possible to participants, reviewing roles with them as appropriate. Where possible, gather with participants and a High Priest mentor to spiritually focus and prepare for the upcoming service. Worship resources: gathering.cofchrist.org
Speaker: Preach the gospel to the called and lost. Prepare with study and prayer, meditating on the week’s theme or special event such as ordination or baptism. Seek God’s Will for the congregation’s hearing and channel that as humbly as possible. Sermon helps; gathering.cofchrist.org
Assister: Assist in the worship service as called upon by the Presider. Most common are to offer prayer or testimony, read scripture, or serve the emblems during Communion.
Music: Accompany and/or lead group singing in the service, commonly from the piano but occasionally with guitar. Practice songs given by the Presider in the order of worship to assure readiness. On occasion offer solo or other special music.
Tech: Assure all aspects of the worship service can be seen and heard by all present. Be prepared with video or other audio recordings provided by the Presider so technology enhances worship.
Deacon: Assure the worship space is organized, clean, a comfortable temperature, and free of unnecessary distractions to enable worship. Prepare emblems for Communion and clean up afterward. Participate in worship during Disciples Generous Response as requested by Presider, organizing and managing collection of offerings. Assure collected monies get to appropriate person for deposit. Manage essential cleaning of facility following service such as removing waste and cleaning up spills. As the last one to leave the premises, assure thermostats are reset and toilets are not running before locking up church building.
Childcare: Provide safe, fun place for children ages 2 to 10 to be, allowing guardians the opportunity to participate in congregational worship. Those covering childcare will have children’s Christian Ed materials accessible, as well, for class facilitation where feasible given age and circumstances. All persons providing childcare must be youth worker certified.
